An Ulster Unionist MLA has had a lucky escape after a tree fell in front of his car during the storm on Sunday.

He suffered only a black eye after a branch smashed through the front windscreen of his vehicle on Harry's Road in Lisburn.

The 50-year-old, a failed contender for the party leadership against Tom Elliott, said his car was destroyed.

He added: "I was very fortunate. I was only a minute from home and was lucky I didn't hit the tree harder than I did."

He said the windscreen completely shattered upon impact.

"I'm told that the real danger in these situations is not the trunk but the branches coming through the window.

"That is what happened in this case and I am glad to have escaped relatively unscathed."
