The Christmas lights around Belfast City Hall in the city centre have been switched on.

This year's comperes were Eamonn Holmes and his wife Ruth Langsford who were joined by Lord Mayor Pat Convery.

Children's TV characters, including Angelina Ballerina and Sportacus, were special guests at Saturday's event.

Several police vehicles were in the vicinity following sectarian disturbances last year when groups of youths were involved in clashes.

The Christmas continental market in the grounds of City Hall was opened after the ceremony.
