Men chased in 'sectarian' assault

An incident in which two men were chased along a Londonderry road by five others and then assaulted was sectarian, the police have said.

The gang pursued them along Dungiven Road before attacking them at the junction of Spencer Road and Chapel Road.

The incident happened in the early hours of 24 October, but details have only just been released.

Another man who was walking by tried to intervene, and was also assaulted.

All three had severe bruising to their faces and broken noses.

One of them sustained broken ribs, and another had surgery for an eye injury.

A police spokesperson said that a number of people were walking past at the time of the attack, and they would like anybody who can help identify those involved to contact them.
