Man 'attacked' with samurai sword

A 27-year-old Derry man has appeared in court charged with attacking a man with a samurai sword.

Londonderry Magistrate's Court was told the victim sustained two large cuts to each side of the head, as well as to his left hand.

Ryan John Joseph Flanagan was charged with causing grievous bodily injury with intent.

The attack was said to have taken place in the defendant's St Joseph's Avenue flat on Wednesday.

Mr Flanagan also faces an unrelated charge of possessing an iron bar in Abercorn Road last month.

He was remanded in custody.
