Lorry driver threatened at gunpoint in Newtownhamilton

A delivery driver had a gun held to his head during an attempted robbery in south Armagh, it has emerged.

The man was travelling on the Cullyhanna Road near Newtownhamilton on Friday morning when a silver van blocked his path.

Two masked men got out of the vehicle, armed with a handgun and a cudgel.

One of the robbers held the gun to the man's head, while another smashed the lorry's passenger window.

The delivery driver managed to reverse his vehicle, and drive off in the direction of a local police station.

A police spokeswoman said he was "extremely traumatised by his ordeal".

Meanwhile, police in Belfast are investigating an armed robbery at a business on the Donegall Road in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A man with a handgun threatened an employee and escaped with a sum of money.

No one was harmed during the incident.
