Polish man attacked in Derry

A district judge has praised a member of the public who went to help a Polish man who was being racially abused and attacked, and was then attacked himself.

Two 24-year-old men appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court on Wednesday in connection with the initial assault on July 17 last year.

James Nash from Altcar Park admitted assault and making a threat to kill.

Ciaran McElhinney from Cornshell Fields, admitted disorderly behaviour.

McElhinney's barrister told the court his client had "a moment of madness" and was drunk at the time.

District Judge Barney McElholm said Mr McLaughlin, who told the defendants to leave before he was punched and kicked himself, was "civic minded" and "stood up for his area".
