A 46-year-old man has appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court charged with the murder of Patrick Harkin in the city on Sunday.

Paul Greatbanks, from Bayview Terrace, was also charged with the attempted murder of Paul Mythen, who remains critically ill in hospital.

The defendant, who is originally from England, replied "yes" when asked if he understood the charges.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear via video link on 10 March.

The district judge, Barney McElholm, offered his condolences to the Harkin family.

He said it was "an extremely sad time" for them.
