Man to stand trial in Belfast on bigamy charge

Scales of justice

An alleged bigamist is to stand trial accused of marrying another woman while his wife was alive, a judge has ruled.

Stanley Jasi, 37, was charged with committing the offence in Harare, Zimbabwe, in July 2006.

Mr Jasi, of Glendhu Manor, Belfast, appeared before the city's Magistrates Court to hear if the case against him should proceed.

A district judge ruled at a preliminary enquiry on Thursday that he should be returned for Crown Court trial.

He rejected a legal aid application for two barristers to represent the accused.

A defence lawyer had made the request, adding: "There are complicating issues in relation to documents originally from Zimbabwe."

However, Judge George Conner restricted the certificate he granted to one counsel.

Jasi was released on his own bail of £200 to attend his trial on a date to be fixed.
