Teenager dies after Newcastle stabbing

Police have launched a murder inquiry after an 18-year-old man was stabbed to death in Newcastle, County Down.

Paul Owens was assaulted on the Bryansford Road near the entrance to Donard Park at about 0100 GMT on Saturday. He died later in hospital.

It is believed he was attacked by a number of people and was stabbed at least three times.

A 29-year-old man arrested about the attack has been released unconditionally, police have said.

A 26-year-old man a woman aged 20 are being questioned about the killing.

Police believe a number of people were in the area at the time and have appealed for witnesses to the incident to contact them.

The Bryansford Road has been closed between Main Street and Shimna Road.

Donard Park in the town will be closed throughout the day. Pedestrian access to the playing field will be permitted, but access to the park and car park will be restricted.

SDLP councillor Carmel O'Boyle, who knew the victim, condemned the murder.

"This young man was a past pupil of my own so I'm feeling particularly shocked this morning at this news," she said.
