The County Antrim grandparents of a severely disabled 14-year-old girl who died in 2001 are to stand trial accused of unlawfully killing her.

David Johnson, 87, and his wife, Sarah, 84, of Carwood Drove, Glengormley, deny harming Rebecca McKeown, who was blind and unable to speak.

A post-mortem examination revealed that she died from shock and extreme blood loss after she was sexually assaulted.

The pair, who appeared in court on Thursday, were released on bail.

Legal proceedings were brought against Mr and Mrs Johnston following a review carried out by the PSNI in 2008.

A judge ruled the couple should be returned to Belfast Crown Court for trial on a date to be fixed.
