Londonderry hit by two armed robberies

Armed men forced staff at a bookmakers in Londonderry to lie on the floor as they robbed the shop on Saturday.

The incident happened at Sean Graham bookmakers on Bishop Street at about 1830 GMT.

The men were armed with a gun and a hammer. Police said the robbers escaped with a sum of cash.

Meanwhile, on Saturday morning, two men armed with handguns robbed a delivery van outside a supermarket in Fairview Road in Galliagh.

One of the men opened the passenger door and punched the 18-year-old driver twice before taking a cash lodgement bag.

The police say there is no indication the two robberies are linked.

The chair of the local District Policing partnership, SDLP councillor Martin Reilly, said such incidents were "very worrying".

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incidents to contact them.
