Detectives investigating the fatal shooting of a woman in a Londonderry seaside town are questioning a man at Antrim Police Station.

The woman, who was 51, died during the incident in a launderette in the Promenade area of Portstewart.

The victim was declared dead at the scene at about 1330 GMT on Friday. A firearm was recovered nearby.

Police said, the man, who is in his 40s, was arrested in the Kilrea area about 20 miles from Portstewart.

Assembly SDLP member John Dallat said the killing had shocked the community.

"My deepest sympathy goes to the family of this woman who was going about her work when she was fatally wounded by the assailant who entered the launderette and killed her with a single shot," he said.

"I would ask anyone who has any information to contact the PSNI immediately."

DUP MLA for East Londonderry, Adrian McQuillan, also appealed for anyone with information about the shooting to contact police and offered the victim's family his "deepest sympathy".

Detectives have asked for anyone who was in the Promenade area at the time to contact them. They would particularly like anyone who saw a gold-coloured Renault Clio car, registration CHZ 771, before or after the shooting to come forward.
