Kilkeel memorial to PSNI crash victims unveiled

A memorial stone in memory of four police officers who lost their lives in a traffic collision in November 2008 was unveiled in Kilkeel on Sunday.

Constables Kevin Gorman, James Magee, Kenny Irvine and Declan Greene lost their lives after the police vehicle they were travelling in struck a wall as they responded to a call for assistance.

The memorial was dedicated at a remembrance service attended by PSNI Deputy Chief Constable Judith Gillespie and former Chief Constable Hugh Orde.

It was erected beside the existing police and combined services memorial in the town centre.

DCC Judith Gillespie said: "James Magee, Kevin Gorman, Declan Greene and Kenneth Irvine died serving the people of Newry and Mourne and fulfilling their commitment to make the local area a safer place for everyone.

"Their sacrifice will never be forgotten by their colleagues, both police officers and police staff, and the memorial stone will honour the difference they made to their own community."
