Three men involved in an attempted robbery in County Londonderry were caught because one of them used his own car.

Judge Piers Grant told Londonderry Crown Court the attempt to rob a shop in Eglinton was "amateurish."

James Phelan, 29, from Ebrington Park was jailed for seven and a half months.

Paul McClay, 20, from Primity crescent in Newbuildings and David Stevenson, 21, from Sperrin Park were both sentenced to nine months.

They were arrested after the car used in the incident which was owned and driven by Phelan was traced.

Judge Grant said the two female shop assistants showed robust character during the incident.
