A 22-year-old man has been arrested in Cork city centre in connection with a fire that killed a woman and her nephew in Cork.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

Helena O'Dwyer, 25, and her five-year-old nephew Ryan O'Dwyer died in the blaze in the early hours of Sunday.

They were among eight people in the house on Nutley Avenue in Mahon when the fire broke out.

Six adults and children were taken from the house suffering from smoke inhalation. They were given oxygen at the scene by fire and ambulance crews before being transferred to Cork University and the Mercy University Hospitals.

Helena O'Dwyer and Ryan O'Dwyer were also taken from the building, but fire fighters failed to resuscitate them and they were pronounced dead.
