A Londonderry man who kicked a bouncer on the head and stamped on his face has been jailed for two years.

Kevin Ward, 28, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to carrying out the unprovoked assault at Pepes nightclub on the Strand Road on 14 April 2008.

Londonderry Crown Court was told Ward, together with another man, attempted to barge their way into the nightclub when they were stopped by the doorman.

They punched and kicked him to the ground and stamped on his face.

The victim suffered a double fracture of the jaw.

Jailing Ward for two years, Judge Piers Grant said he was aware that paramilitaries had had an effect on Ward and his family, but the courts had to send out a message in terms of sentencing to deter other people from committing such offences.
