Police probe attack on three boys in Newtownards

Three 12-year-old boys have been attacked in Newtownards in County Down.

The assault happened at the rear of the West Winds estate in the Old Railway area of the town on Tuesday night.

One of the boys was hit in the face with a liquid, which police say may have been flammable. The child was treated for minor burns to his head and hands.

The other two boys were not injured in the attack.

Ulster Unionist Mike Nesbitt said the assault could have had "dreadful consequences".

"This was quite simply an act of lunacy on the part of whoever carried out this attack," he added.

"This type of behaviour simply cannot be tolerated and the perpetrator must be caught immediately before someone is seriously injured."
