Machete gang rob elderly Newtownards couple

A couple in their 80s have been robbed in their home in a County Down town.

Police said three masked men forced their way into the house and threatened the couple with a machete.

The incident occurred on the Moneyreagh Road in the Tullyhubert area of Newtownards just before midnight on Friday.

The pair were unhurt but badly shaken by their ordeal. The robbers escaped with a sum of money. Police want anyone with information to contact them.

Strangford MLA Jonathan Bell said the robbers were the "lowest of the low".

"The long term trauma of the violation and cash robbery of your own home will last far longer than the headlines of this dastardly crime," he added.

"Our elderly deserve better and I appeal to the public particularly anyone in the Moneyrera Road area around midnight to cooperate fully with the police."
