Four teenagers have been rescued after getting stuck on the Lagan embankment in south Belfast.

It happened after a girl fell into the river near the Albert Bridge early on Saturday morning.

Three teenage boys went to help, but were unable to get back onto the footpath. Fire crews managed to bring them to safety.

Nigel Evans of the NI Fire Service praised the courage of the boy who pulled the girl out of the river.

"He was very level-headed, I think he probably saved her life," he said.

"He acted very courageously and when he was speaking to us he said he didn't even think twice.

"The minute she ended up in the river, he went in and dragged her to the side."

The girl was taken to hospital following the incident, but has since been released.
