An Post official and family held captive by armed gang

An official from An Post, his partner and their child have been held captive by an armed gang at their home in Drogheda, County Louth.

Their ordeal began at 2200 BST on Monday. After several hours, they were taken to another location.

The official was forced to go to a post office this morning. He then went to an agreed location and handed over money.

The man, his partner and child were released unharmed at Damastown, County Dublin, at lunchtime on Tuesday.

Police said the family had been through a "traumatic experience".

During the course of the morning police became aware of the incident and a comprehensive response team was put in place involving both local and national units.
