Man critical after fire breaks out in a Derry flat

A 31-year-old man is in a critical condition after sustaining severe burns in a fire at a flat in Londonderry.

The fire service said they were called to Shearwater Way in the Clooney area at about 04:30 BST on Saturday.

The flat was extensively damaged, but the man had managed to escape before they arrived.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, although police have said it is not believed to have been started maliciously.

He was taken to Altnagelvin hospital and has been transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
