Derry man Simon Whiteman in court over car hijacking

A 26-year-old man has appeared in court in Londonderry charged with hijacking and setting fire to a car on the same day as a parade in the city.

Simon James Whiteman, who is from Beechwood Avenue in the city, is charged with a number of other offences including throwing a petrol bomb.

The alleged offences took place during the Apprentice Boys parade on 13 August.

He was remanded in custody until October.

He is also charged with helping others to throw petrol bombs and with driving dangerously while without a licence or insurance on the same date.
