Plans to turn a seven mile pedestrian route through east Belfast into a busway have been dropped.

It is understood the formal announcement not to use the Comber Greenway as part of a rapid bus transit system will be made next week.

The path, which runs along an old railway line from Dee Street in east Belfast to Comber, is increasingly popular with cyclists and walkers.

The cost of the plan is believed to be the major factor in the decision.
