The body of a missing Newry pensioner has been found.

Seventy-three-year-old Maurice Owens had not been seen since going to Mass on Sunday morning.

His body was discovered on Thursday evening in Camlough Lake, County Armagh.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious and are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination of the body.

Mr Owens' niece and South Down MLA, Karen McKevitt, said the family were totally "shocked that the outcome has been this way".

"At the same it's just pure relief that they have found him now," she said.

"The messages of support and sympathy that have been coming across our phones and from people calling at the homes, has been indescribable."

Mr Owens had not been seen since leaving his Barcroft Park home at about 10:00 BST on Sunday.

Up to 250 people had been helping to search for the pensioner, whose disappearance was described as "completely out of character".
