Police in Londonderry have launched a murder investigation after a stabbing victim died from his injuries in hospital.

The 51-year-old man, locally named as Damien Keenan from Derry, died in hospital on Wednesday.

He was attacked in the Francis Street area of the city at 13:30 GMT on Tuesday.

A 34-year-old woman, who was arrested following the incident on suspicion of attempted murder, remains in custody.

The local priest, Father Dermot Harkin, has visited the victim's family.

"A death in ordinary circumstances brings its own grief and distress, but in circumstances where there's any element of tragedy, you feel so sorry for people," he said.

"They didn't know if they were coming or going."
