Hatchet/sledgehammer raids in Newtownabbery linked

Police believe the same man may have robbed four shops in County Antrim over two days while armed with a hatchet one night and a sledgehammer the other.

The man stole cash from shops on the Carnmoney Road in Newtownabbey and the Shore Road in Greenisland on Thursday night.

Two robberies were carried out by a man armed with a sledgehammer in Newtownabbey on Wednesday evening.

The man in each incident was about 6ft tall and wearing a hooded top.

He also wore a balaclava during Thursday night's raids.

The first robbery on Thursday was at 17:50 GMT, the second was at 18:50 GMT.

The two on Wednesday were at a service station on the Shore Road at about 17:45 GMT and from a shop on the Circular Road at about 18:20 GMT.

Police have appealed for for witnesses to contact them.
