A bar has been badly damaged in an arson attack in Killyleagh, County Down.

The incident at the Castle Arms at High Street in the village was reported at about 02:45 GMT on Thursday.

It is not thought that anyone was in the building at the time of the incident. The blaze was put out at about 03:40 GMT.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the attack to contact detectives in Downpatrick.

"The fire had been started in the downstairs lounge area of the bar and was developing rapidly," Downpatrick Fire Station Commander Mark Maginness said.

"Due to the quick and determined efforts of the fire crews the fire was quickly distinguished and prevented from spreading through the whole property and indeed adjacent properties.

"But unfortunately there was quite a lot of damage caused as a result of the heat and smoke."
