Pensioner dies in Rathcoole house fire

A pensioner has died in a house fire in the Rathcoole estate in Newtownabbey.

The man, who is believed to have been in his 80s, died after a blaze in his terraced bungalow in Carmeen Drive.

A second man, believed to be in his 50s, has been taken to hospital after breathing in smoke while attempting to rescue the pensioner.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Three Fire and Rescue Service appliances were sent to the fire at about 15:30 GMT on Tuesday.

Fire and forensic officers are trying to establish the cause of the fire.
