Lurgan man accused of police officer murder attempts

A 41-year-old Lurgan man has appeared in court charged with attempting to murder two police officers.

Justin Francis Jude McAreavey, from Filbin Crescent, appeared following an incident at the weekend.

One officer suffered injuries to his head and face in the attack in Lurgan's Kilwilkie estate.

The self-employed joiner faced two charges of attempted murder, as well as four counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon, namely two knives.

The officer in charge of the case told the court she believed she could connect the defendant to the charges.

District Judge Rosalie Prytherch remanded the defendant in custody to appear in Craigavon via videolink on 2 March.
