Boy rescued from upturned canoe

A 13-year-old boy has been rescued after his canoe overturned on the River Bann at Coleraine.

The incident happened near the marina at about 18:30 GMT on Saturday.

His mother, who was on the opposite side of the river bank, contacted the emergency services when her child got into difficulty.

The boy was found at the river's edge. He was shaken but uninjured. The Fire and Rescue Service and Community Rescue Service were involved.

Bill Wilsdon of the NIFRS said the child had been found in the reeds.

"If he had drifted on about half a mile down the river, he could have got into trouble," he said.

Sean McCarry from the Community Rescue Service said the boy had a lucky escape.

"It was pitch darkness," he said.

"He was in a canoe with no experience, and he finds himself in a very precarious position, in a fast moving river. He was very lucky to get out."
