Nephew in court on attempted murder charge

A 44-year-old man has appeared in court in Enniskillen charged with attempting to murder his uncle.

Paul Hartop, whose address was given as Main Street, Dromore, spoke only to confirm he understood the charge.

A police officer told the court that, during interview, he had told police he believed his family had been conspiring against him to make him homeless.

The court was told 73-year-old Brendan Hartop was in a critical condition after being beaten with a hammer.

The accused was remanded in custody to appear again by videolink in Omagh in two weeks.

During police interview, Mr Hartop also said he had decided to kill either his sister and her husband or his uncle.

Brendan Hartop was assaulted in his home at Main Street, Dromore, County Tyrone on Sunday morning.
