Girl hurt as lorry tyre crashes into car

A County Tyrone woman has said her daughter is lucky to be alive after a wheel came off a lorry and crashed through the windscreen of a car in which she was the front-seat passenger.

Eleven-year-old Lucy Robb and her uncle were driving home to Artigarvan on Friday when they were showered with glass during the accident near Bready.

Lucy spent two nights in hospital being treated for facial injuries.

She has to return for further assessment of damage to her eyes.

"Lucy had facial injuries with the glass breaking in the car and glass went into her eyes and that's where the worst damage was," said Jennifer Robb.

"She was in so much pain on Friday night, and again on Saturday, the doctors weren't able to get a proper look at her eyes so they are not sure if there is any more damage done to her eyes."

Lucy said the last thing she remembered about the accident was passing the church in Bready.

"As they got to the top of Bready hill, a tyre came off a lorry, hit the car on the other side of the road then bounced back and hit the windscreen, knocking it in around then," said Jennifer.

"His (Lucy's uncle) recollection is that the tyre came at them like a frisbee, straight over the roof of the car, knocking the windscreen in.

"If it had come through lower down things could have been very different. She's a lucky girl."
