Toddler girl from Belfast dies in Mayo caravan accident

A two-year-old girl from Belfast has died in a tragic accident at a caravan park in County Mayo.

Erin Thomson from the Gilnahirk area died after being hit by a caravan which was being moved in a field at about 14:30 BST on Saturday. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Erin's parents, Alan and Sonya, and brother Scott are being comforted by relatives.

The family were on holiday at the time.

Alliance councillor Tim Morrow said: "I can't think of anything worse to happen than to lose a child of that age, particularly on holiday.

"I have lost loved ones but nothing compares to what that family are going through. The child's whole life was just ahead of her and the parents were looking forward to enjoying her. My thoughts and prayers are with them."

Irish police said the little girl's body had been taken to Castlebar Hospital following the accident where a post mortem examination was carried out.

A garda spokeswoman said they were treating it as a "tragic incident".
