Bargain Books couple disqualified over £1m rates bill

A couple who ran the Bargain Books chain have been disqualified from acting as directors after the business failed leaving unpaid rates of £1m.

Alan Trevor Thompson from Meadow Dale, Newtownabbey, accepted a seven-year ban and his wife Maureen a six year ban.

The company, which had the registered name T Thompson & Company Ltd, went bust in March 2010.

It owed creditors £2.4m, the largest of which was the government agency which collects rates.

Bargain Books had 20 branches across Northern Ireland, but like many retailers ran into trouble during the recession.

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment said the firm had been trading while insolvent for two years before it was placed into administration.
