Ballyclare supermarket site repossessed and up for sale

A site in County Antrim which had been earmarked for a major retail development has been repossessed by a bank and put up for sale.

Developers had applied for planning permission to build a supermarket, petrol station and business units at the former FG Wilson site on the Hillhead Road in Ballyclare.

However, Allied Irish Bank put the site into receivership earlier this month and it is now for sale via a Belfast property agent.

A previous application to build a Tesco superstore on the nine-acre site was turned down by planners in 2011.

The property was owned by an Isle of Man-registered firm, Ballyclare Developments (IOM).

It is controlled by three property developers from Londonderry and Cookstown.

A planning report commissioned by the developers had claimed if the scheme got the go-ahead it would represent an investment of £15m and create work for up to 400 people.
