Twitter use by Stormont MLAs on the increase

More than three-fifths of Northern Ireland's assembly members regularly use Twitter, according to research.

Public relations firm Stratagem found the SDLP was the most active party on the social network, with 93% of its MLAs tweeting.

It was closely followed by the Ulster Unionist Party, which has 87% of its assembly members on Twitter.

DUP leader Peter Robinson has the most followers, with just over 7,100, almost 2,500 more than his nearest rival, Sinn Fein's Barry McElduff.

The most prolific tweeter was Sinn Fein's Phil Flanagan, who has sent more than 7,000 tweets to his 2,111 followers.

Stratagem analyst Grainne Mathews said: "Whilst there are plenty of 'less than ideal' examples of Twitter use amongst some MLAs, nonetheless it is good to see so many grasping its potential as an innovative way of communicating with citizens.

"Used properly, the instant nature of Twitter offers a fresh and personalised glimpse at the daily activity of our elected representatives."
