Man held as part of 1974 murder probe is charged

A 72-year-old man has been charged with escaping from lawful custody in May 1974.

He was arrested earlier on Monday in Newtownards, County Down, as part of an investigation by police into the murder of Ellen McDowell in April 1974

She was 21 when she was shot as she walked home with her boyfriend in the Shankill Road area of Belfast.

The 72-year-old man is set to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Police said he would also be reported to the Public Prosecution Service in relation to a number of other alleged offences.
