A man has been cleared of attacking police during rioting at Ardoyne in north Belfast on 12 July last year.

Roy Lillis, 25, of Cromwell Road in the city, was unanimously acquitted by a jury at Belfast Crown Court.

The court was told police footage had only filmed him at the scene but he was not doing anything wrong.

He had previously admitted to a charge of rioting 24 hours earlier when police were attacked at Oldpark Road, the court heard.

Ahead of the trial, four other men admitted rioting while a fifth man pleaded guilty to a charge of encouraging a riot on 12 July 2011.

All five were released on bail, pending the completion of pre-sentence probation reports before sentencing.
