Police have said a letter bomb found inside a post box in Clough, County Down, was capable of causing death or serious injury.

It was discovered about 21:00 GMT on Thursday after police received a report of a man acting suspiciously.

Army technical officers were called to the Dundrum Road and made the device safe.

It has been taken away for examination. Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

DUP MLA for the area, Jim Wells, said: "These things can kill. Maybe the intention was to intimidate or threaten but these types of devices are hugely dangerous.

"If they go off they can cause death or serious injury."
