Whiteabbey 'hit-and-run': man arrested after woman is knocked down

A 34-year-old man has been been arrested after a woman was knocked down and seriously injured in a 'hit-and-run' collision in County Antrim.

The elderly woman was hit by a car on the Shore Road in Whiteabbey at about 14:40 GMT on Tuesday. The driver did not remain at the scene.

A short time later, police detained a 34-year-old man on suspicion of dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily injury, failing to stop and report a crash and driving with excess alcohol.

The arrest took place in Whiteabbey village.

The elderly woman was taken to hospital with injuries which that were described as significant but not life threatening.

The man was questioned and later released on bail.
