A search operation is under way in the Irish Republic for a Spanish fisherman who fell overboard from a trawler.

The search is taking place 37 miles south west of Castletownbere in west Cork.

It is understood the man was not wearing a life jacket when he fell from the Spanish-registered trawler, the Ecco Homo, at about 04:15 GMT on Tuesday.

Two naval ships and a rescue helicopter are taking part in the search.

A number of trawlers are also involved.
