A former police officer has been jailed for five months for having almost 1,000 images of children being abused.

Richard Chilvers, 34, pleaded guilty to 22 charges that included possessing, making and distributing indecent images of children.

He has resigned from the PSNI, but his address was given as c/o Tennent Street police station in Belfast.

A prosecution barrister said 985 indecent images of children, mostly videos, were on an external hard drive.

A defence lawyer said Chilvers "hung his head in shame" at the crime.

The court heard the accused's parents died in the Kegworth air crash in 1989 when he was ten years old, and that when he was a teenager he was sexually abused.

The judge at Downpatrick Crown Court acknowledged there were mitigating circumstances, but said a suspended sentence was not appropriate.

He jailed Chilvers for five months, with a further year to be served on licence.
