A 21-year-old man has admitted killing Irish journalist Eugene Moloney.

Gary Burch, from Kennington Close, Templeogue, County Dublin, admitted the manslaughter of Mr Moloney at Camden Street, Dublin, on 24 June 2012

Mr Moloney, 55, was on his way home from a night out with friends when he was attacked. He died in hospital.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court was told on Monday that Burch has no previous convictions. He is due to be sentenced in June.

The court was told that Burch had spent time voluntarily in custody, was granted bail before Christmas and had abided by all conditions.

Mr Moloney, originally from Donegal, began his career at the Irish News in Belfast where he reported through some of the worst days of the Troubles in the 1970s and 1980s.

He then moved to the Irish Independent in Dublin where he worked for more than 20 years.
