A man has been jailed for life after he admitted murdering his neighbour in Londonderry.

A defence lawyer asked for the charges to be put again to Paul Greatbanks, 48, and he pleaded guilty to murdering Patrick Harkin on 20 February 2011.

Greatbanks, whose address was given as c/o Maghaberry Prison, also admitted trying to murder Letterkenny man Paul Mythen, 39, in the same incident.

The minimum term Greatbanks must serve is to be fixed next month.

No details of the murder were given at Antrim Crown Court, sitting in Belfast, on Monday, but previous courts heard that at the time of the killing, Greatbanks lived in the Bayview Terrace flat below where 49-year-old Mr Harkin was found dead.

Mr Harkin, a married father of one, died from head injuries on 20 February 2011.
