Planning go-ahead for expansion of Abbey retail park

Planners have given the go-ahead for the expansion of the Abbey retail park in Newtownabbey, County Antrim.

The development will add more than 8,000 sq metres of retail space and two restaurant units.

The developer, London-based Hammerson, will also build a new clubhouse for Whiteabbey Veterans Association whose premises form part of the site.

The retail park is anchored by B&Q and Tesco; the extension is across the car park from the existing units.

Meanwhile planners have also approved expansion plans for another Newtownabbey retail park.

The Hampshire pension fund, which owns the Shorelands retail park on the Shore Road, has been given permission to build a 929 sq metre unit on part of the car park.

The existing tenants are Dunelm and Fitness First.
