A suspicious object found at a Catholic church in Newtownabbey, County Antrim, has been described by police as an elaborate hoax.

An Army bomb disposal team attended the scene at St Mary's Star of the Sea church on Sunday.

The Shore Road was closed between the Hazelbank roundabout citybound and the Doagh Road and a number of homes were evacuated.

The alert has now ended and all roads have re-opened.
