City of Derry airport cannabis man gets six months jail
A Portuguese man has been sentenced to six months in jail for attempting to smuggle cannabis resin through City of Derry airport.
Nelson Alexandre Carraco Reis, 32, of Pomeroy, County Tyrone, was caught with 504g of cannabis resin when stopped and questioned by Border Force officers.
He had arrived on a flight from Faro in Portugal on 2 August last year.
The Class B drugs have an estimated street value of £5,000.
When questioned about the five packages wrapped in brown tape, discovered in his baggage, Reis admitted to the officers that it was "hashish" and that he was aware that it was illegal to import controlled drugs into the country.
