Man dies after Chamberlain Street, east Belfast, attack

Police have released the name of the man murdered in east Belfast in the early hours of Sunday.

Stanley McAuley, 41, died in hospital after being assaulted in an alleyway at Chamberlain Street off the lower Newtownards Road.

A 33-year-old man is being questioned about the murder.

Police were called to the scene shortly after 01:00 BST where they found Mr McAuley unconscious. He died later in the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

They want anyone who was in the Newtownards Road/Chamberlain Street area between 01:00 and 01:30 BST and who may have noticed any suspicious activity to contact them on 0845 600 8000 or on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 .

DUP assembly member Sammy Douglas spoke to people in the area on Sunday morning.

"They're absolutely shocked, it's a very close-knit community, but also sad as well to think that this would happen on their doorstep," he said.

"I would certainly offer my condolences and prayers to the family."
