Woman's body is found after Georges Lane, Newry, fire

A woman has been found dead following a fire at a house in Newry.

Police are treating the fire, at Georges Lane in the city, as suspicious. It was reported to them just after 23:05 GMT on Saturday.

The woman's body was found in the house. No details about her have so far been released.

Police have appealed for anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area, or who has any information, to contact them on 0845 600 8000.

Sinn Féin Councillor Charlie Casey said he believed the woman was in her 20s but was not originally from the area.

"This is very grim news coming from a quiet part of Newry and my thoughts are with the family of the deceased woman," Mr Casey said.

"I urge anyone with information relating to this incident to contact the PSNI and again I offer my condolences to the family."

Dominic Bradley, SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh, also visited the scene and expressed his condolences to the woman's relatives.

"This is terrible news for a family to receive, made worse by the tragic circumstances.

"On behalf of the community here I extend sympathy to the family on this very sad occasion for them," he said.
