George Best Belfast City Airport has said it enjoyed one of its most successful years ever in 2013, with passenger numbers up by 13% to 2.5m.

A spokesperson said this year it hopes to add new flights to European cities not currently served from Belfast.

Civil Aviation Authority figures show that Belfast International handled 4m passengers in 2013, a decrease of 7%.

Belfast City Airport's chief executive said the World Police and Fire Games helped boost its passenger numbers.

Brian Ambrose added that 2013 "was one of the busiest years in our 30-year history".

The airport, in east Belfast, handled almost 37,000 flight movements last year.

A planning agreement limits the number of flight movements it is permitted to handle to 48,000 annually.

Mr Ambrose said all future growth would be managed "within this cap".
